Description:
Woman's hat in natural light brown straw lined with white polished cotton, which was worn by donor and donor's mother with their brown plaid wedding gown (HD V.90). During the 1880s, women’s dress was influenced by aspects of men’s clothing. This style of hat, known as a capote or round hat, mimics the tall crown and brim of a man’s hat. The jaunty tip up of the brim on one side, the addition of three matching bows, and perhaps an ostrich feather or two (now missing), however, would have firmly identified it as a woman’s accessory. The hat has brown silk grosgrain ribbon in loose lobes simulating three bows tacked to crown on front and top left side (ribbon is 2.38" grosgrain with piqued edge, some of the lobes are wired) and dark brown velvet edge on brim. The crown is 6.5" high and tapers from 4 x 7.5" bottom to 3.25 x 4" on top. The brim is cocked on left side and is 3" deep in front, 1.25" deep in back, 1.75" right side, and 5" on left (and curls slightly inward).
