Label Text:
This portrait of the artist’s older brother, Samuel Elmer, was painted when the artist was about age twenty-two. The trefoil arch in the background, a tracery from Giotto’s campanile in Florence, Italy, was copied from John Ruskin’s Seven Lamps of Architecture.
