Description:
English creamware baluster-shaped jug with strap handle and pointed spout decorated with gilding and two overglaze transfer prints. One side with a print of a politcal cartoon, perhaps a rendition of the 1778 print "A Picturesque View of the Nation," featuring a cow at center and three men. The three men are identified as "Bunoparte [Napoleon Bonaparte]," "Jefferson," and "John Bull." The reverse with a stock print of a three masted ship flying an American flag with 15 stars and 16 stripes. The rim and base of the jug are decorated with gilding in the form of star and cross-hatched patterns, and the front of the jug features a gilt design of vines with leaves and berries. Traces of gilt initials appear on the front of the jug just below the spot, but are illegible. A good portion of the gilt decoration has worn off over time.
