Description:
A pair of shoe buckles believed to have been owned and worn by General Artemas Ward (1727-1800). For much of the eighteenth century, fashionable shoes for both men and women fastened to the feet by means of latchets, or straps, that extended over the instep. These latchets were fastened using pronged buckles. The shape and decoration of this pair suggest a date during the third or early fourth quarter of the eighteenth century.
