Description:
Linen bed sheet made from two selvage widths of white linen. Each selvage width is about 38" wide, and the widths are joined in the center of the sheet with a whip-stitched seam. Such a contruction may illustrate the "pairs" of bedsheets seenin written records of the period, including probate inventories. The sheet is hemmed at the top and bottom with a 1/8" hem. This particular sheet is believed to have belonged to a British officer, who was captured during the American Revolution by General Artemus Ward (1727-1800).
