Rimer made this study after a painting by Jean-Francois de Troy, showing the Old Testament Queen Esther (and made in preparation for a set of Gobelin tapestries). For Rimer’s Victorian viewers, Queen Esther was a strong, moral woman, who delivered the Jews from massacre by informing her husband, the Persian King Ahasuerus, of the plot, thereby revealing her own Jewish identity (a event celebrated in the annual feast of Purim).
