Carroll Island lies in the estuary of the Gunpowder River near Baltimore. The swans depicted are most likely trumpeter swans, no longer present in the region. In the 1860s and later, hunters shot them as game birds, which led to their present scarcity. Currier & Ives, the most prolific lithography firm of the nineteenth century, issued prints in many genres: portraiture, political satire, city and town views, religion, education, and natural history. The firm issued most of its prints anonymously, which suggests they derived their subjects from previously published sources. These prints, even if not original in conception, made excellent additions to the decor of middle-class homes.
