Label Text:
Bennett received training as an artist and printmaker at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and it is possible that he was acquainted with both William Guy Wall and John Hill in London, before arriving in New York in 1826. Bennett and Hill had each aquatinted plates for The Microcosm of London, published by Rudolph Ackermann in 1808. Bennett produced an important series of views of American cities, including two of Baltimore, published by Henry G. Megarey of New York. As is typical of urban views at this time, the city is a minor element. Cows, vegetation, water, and sky dominate.
