Label Text:
This grandfather clock with eight-day brass movement has close ties to the Pioneer Valley. It came from the Northampton workshop of the clockmaker Isaac Gere, at a time when the town was experiencing commercial growth and manufacturing development. Gere’s productions drew on the influence of styles in bigger cities such as Boston, New York, and, in this case, Philadelphia.

Gere worked with mechanism components imported from England. In this clock, the intermediate plate bears the signature of James Wilson, a well-known dial maker in Birmingham active between 1777–1809. The Philadelphia-style cabinet case for the clock was adjusted for its specific time-keeping function, and sized to fit lower ceilings of local houses.
