Description:
Portrait of an older woman [Mrs. Brewster], three-quarter view, woman has black bonnet which covers most of her hair, gold wire framed spectacles, a starched ruffle shirt collar, and a black dress, she has rosy cheeks with some wrinkles on forehead. Painted in black on the reverse, "Painted by Geo.r F. Buttume/1879 Springfield/ Mass." Framed in a modern gilt wood and composition ornament frame with a border of ears of corn. Painting is in a hyper-realistic style similar to a photograph. The artist George Bottume is listed as being born in Baltic, CT in 1828, although the Death Registry in Springfield lists his birthplace as Lisbon, CT. Around the age of thirteen, he left to study in New York City, returning around 1845. For a time he worked in Norwich, and then traveled throughout Connecticut. He eventually settled in Springfield, Massachusetts where he was primarily a portrait painter, although he was known to have completed some landscapes. He died on July 17, 1900 at the age of 72.
