Description:
Framed print (engraving on steel) titled "Northampton./ (Massachusetts)" engraved by R. Sands after a drawing by William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854). This print also appeared in Volume 1 of "American Scenery" (London: George Virtue, 1840) by Nathaniel Parker Willis, which is illustrated with engravings made from Bartlett's drawings from his four visits to the United States between 1836 and 1852. The view is from the porch of the Warner House Hotel with part of a sign visible for "HOUSE/ J. B. VINTON", which burned in 1870, looking eastward along Main Street toward its intersection with King Street (now Rt. 5). On the left side are: former Edwards Church, built 1833 and burned 1870; gambrel-roofed house built for Deacon Ebenezer Hunt (a hatter) in 1770 and later owned by Dr. Ebenezer Hunt (portrait HD 67.160) and Dr. David Hunt, and burned 1870; Shop Row or Merchants Row where Benjamin Ely Cook (portrait HD 61.068) and Nathan Storrs had jewelry stores; and the end of Granite Row and the Old First Church, built 1812.
