Description: Pink transfer printed, jiggered plate with scalloped rim, floral border, and a central scene of Monte Video, the country estate of Hartford, Connecticut, resident Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848). The reverse is stamped "ADAMS," for William Adams & Sons of Tunstall in Staffordshire. Transfer printed in pink on the reverse is the number "19" along with the title, "MONTE VIDEO / CONNECTICUT / U.S," which is set in a frame formed by two cornucopia and surmounted by an eagle. The plate is part of a larger series by William Adams & Sons, titled "American Views," which featured a number of natural landscapes, such as the White Mountains in New Hampshire, the Falls of Niagara in New York, and Harper's Ferry in Virginia. Situated atop Talcott Mountain in Avon, Connecticut, Monte Video included not only a house and extensive gardens, but also an observation tower, which came to be known as Wadsworth Tower. The plate's depiction of Monte Video is copied from an engraving by Fenner Sears & Co., after a painting by Thomas Cole, which was published in John Howard Hinton's History and Topography of the United States, Vol. 2 (London, 1832).
