A nude painting with several figures on a beachside, in the ocean. In the center of the painting, Amphitrite reclines on a shoal. Putti surround her; large sea animals flank her, as do male and female sea nymphs.

Label Text:
Taraval is considered one of the last masters of “la grande décoration” of the late eighteenth century which fantasized scenes of love and mythology. This painting shows the nereid (or sea nymph) Amphitrite, lover of the sea god Poseidon, borne in queenly procession on the backs of dolphins and other sea creatures. The lush colors, curving bodies and cloth textures exemplify the Rococo style. The position of the sea creatures’ bodies and the sash carried by putti draw the eye towards the sea queen, reinforcing her importance.
