Description:
Commissioned by the owner, Sir Roger Bodenham, who built the house, as the centerpiece of a walnut-panelled dining room. The elaborate Renaissance-style design of the fireplace surround and overmantel includes architectural elements such as columns, plinths, arches, capitals, caryatids, and groteschi. Flanking a coat-of-arms, are four female personifications of the cardinal virtues: Fortitude, Temperance, Justice, and Prudence.
