Description:
Woman's open robe with matching petticoat, made from a yellow plain weave silk that is decorated with a brocaded floral design in eight colors and additional metallic embroidery. Selvage width is 21.25". The robe was filled in in the front with a stomacher at the bodice, and a petticoat at the skirt. While the textile of this garment is a superb example of 18th-century workmanship, the construction of the garment is a modern (20th-century) approximation of a robe a la francaise, or sack back (Watteau) style. The original lining has been removed from the garment. The selvage width is 21". There are no contrasting colors woven into the selvage.
