Description:
Comb-back Windsor armchair with an extra comb. The chair was descended in the Stebbins/Sheldon Family of Deerfield, Massachusetts, and was pictured in the Allen sisters' photos taken in the early 1900s while George Sheldon (1818-1916) Deerfield's town historian, was living in the Joseph Stebbins house. There is an old painted inscription under the seat, the first part of which is indecipherable, that states: "?? of Joe's House 1898. About 100 old." "Joe" is probably Colonel Joseph Stebbins (1749-1816), from whom both George Sheldon and his second wife, Jennie Maria Arms Sheldon (1852-1938) were descended. The chair continued to descend through the Sheldon family until it was sold at auction. The chair has a comb crest over a step down back with straight turnings, a saddle seat, incised grooves on the plain arms and legs, and plain stretchers and rockers. The chair is covered with an old, crackled dark stain.
