Label Text:
Goya's series Los Desastres de la Guerra (The Disasters of War) was created during the tumultuous years between 1810 and 1820. During this period Spain was invaded by Napoleon who installed his brother Joseph Bonaparte on the throne in 1808. He was succeeded by Ferdinand IV, whose reign was marked by famine and conflict. The series was not published until after Goya's death in 1863, although life-time impressions of each work were consulted to capture the artist's original intent on how each piece was to be labeled and printed.
The works are graphic depictions of the brutality, cruelty, and destruction associated with armed conflict. The eye-level viewpoint in each scene puts the viewer in the midst of the event, a compositional technique that makes these images particularly disturbing and effective.
