Description:
Pewter porringer with a ducal coronet ear. According to John Davis of Colonial Williamsburg: "Porringers with handles with a ducal coronet over a plain circular reserve for stamped or engraved owner's initials or other designation placed in the center and framed by foliated scrolls first appear in English pewter about 1715. Ian D. Robinson, on his article on porringers of this type, observes that he had never seen an example with a London maker's mark. By far, almost all these porringers come from Bristol and bear the marks of makers whose work was exported to America, such as Cox... Allen Bright... Burgum & Catcott, Robert Bush I, Richard Going, and Ingram & Hunt. That these porringers were made for the export market is not surprising, since most porringers of this type date after the English had abandoned the form." The old label says: "early English", and dealer number Snow #M660.
