Description: Portrait; head and shoulders of man with beard, wearing costume with ruff; faux emblematic ornamental frame with writing
Label Text: Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644) was one of the founders of the Remonstrants, a Protestant sect that was expelled from the Dutch Reformed church during the early seventeenth century for diverting from the tenets of Calvinism. Before his conversion, Wtenbogaert held the position of pastor to the court of Stadholder (Governor) Maurits of Nassau. It is likely that this print was produced during this time to commemorate his official position. During the Twelve-Year Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic (1609-1621), increasing political and religious polarization strained Maurits’s and Wtenbogaert’s relationship. Wtenbogaert fled the country in 1618. After Maurits’s death, when the less stringent Frederik Hendrik became Stadtholder, Wtenbogaert returned to the Netherlands and remained active in religious circles until his death.
