Description: religion - Christian; woman; boy; man
Label Text: This shimmering image of the Virgin and Child was painted by an artist known for his devotion to the Virgin, shown here with a melancholy expression characteristic of Sano di Pietro's style. Sano di Pietro made this and other small paintings to inspire the private prayers of both wealthy patrons and the monks and nuns of nearby monasteries.
Here the Virgin gazes tenderly at the Christ Child, who is resplendent in gold and pink robes and the subject of devotion for the gathered saints and angels. A few beads of a rosary are visible between the praying hands of St. Jerome, at the left, Saint Bernardino of Siena is at the right, recognizable by his thin, emaciated face. The gilded halo around the Virgin Mary's head bears the Latin inscription: "Ave gratia plena" (Hail, full of grace), part of the Archangel Gabriel's greeting to her at the Annunciation.
