Label Text:
This view of the house behind shrubs and trees brings to mind Polenov’s Grandmother’s Garden (see the label for print No. 1 in this series). Vassiliev, however, doesn’t render the place in a peaceful light but creates a disturbing atmosphere. With the black sky contrasting the light foliage and with the deep shadows on the house, he creates a scene oscillating between a moonlit night and a sunny day. The treatment of the motif also reminds the viewer of a photographic negative that preserves the appearance of a place that is no longer there.
