Label Text:
A silhouette representing Vassiliev appears against the dark background of the house with the mezzanine. While the artist glances at Chekhov's world, he obviously doesn’t belong to it. His figure grows out of the plain paper surrounding the scene. In this way, Vassiliev clearly separates the historical and intellectual environments of the past and the present.

The appearance of the house in this print differs from that of the house in print No. 2. The use of two different models for the house corresponds with Vassiliev’s explanation that he aims not to retell Chekhov’s story but to have a conversation with the story and its author.
