Label Text:
A token of mourning for a lost love and a lost country, the black rose marks the end of the Chekhovian storyline. Multiple frames mark different moments and places in the story—from the garden to Zhenia’s window—illustrating once more the intertwining of past and present. With this print, the tale of the house with the mezzanine comes to a close, and a new chapter in the life of its characters begins, extending beyond the confines of Chekhov’s narrative and into the Soviet era.
