Description:
Certificate appointing Stephen W. Williams (1790-1855) as Surgeon of the second Regiment of Infantry in the second Brigade of the fourth Division of the Militia on August 29, 1816, dated September 9, 1816, and signed by Alben Bradford, Secretary of the Commonwealth and John Brooks, Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. On the reverse is a statement that Williams had taken the oath of qualification on Sept. 14, 1816 and signed E. Hoyt, Brigadier General, who was Epaphras Hoyt (1765-1850) of Deerfield. Dr. Stephen West Williams of Deerfield was the son of Dr. William Stoddard Williams (1762-1829) and grandson of Dr. Thomas Williams (1718-1775), who attended medical school in NYC.
