Description:
Square-shaped fichu or neckerchief woven in England or America, made from Indian- or English-woven cotton. With a history of ownership to the family of Elisha Porter (1742-1796) of Hadley, Massachusetts, it is an important example of a late 18th-or early 19th-century clothing accessory owned and worn in the Connecticut River Valley. Larger neckerchiefs or fichus were worn by women around their neck, often also covering a garment's neckline for modesty, especially during the day.
