Label Text: Luca Carlevariis documented the city of Venice as a center of international importance and activity. A printmaker as well as a painter, he published The Buildings and Views of Venice in 1703, which was widely praised as a visual document of this vibrant city and its architecture.
This painting is a portrait of the Campo Rialto, a banking and commercial center on the oldest settled island in Venice’s Grand Canal. Here, the Campo bustles with crowds of people from different walks of life. To the right is the pink façade of the church of San Giacomo, with its large fifteenth-century clock and gothic, columned portico. The arcaded building is the Fabbriche Vecchie (Old Buildings). It was built in 1522 with shops on the ground floor and residences above.
