Label Text:
"We favor the simple expression of the complex thought. We are for the large shape because it has the impact of the unequivocal. We wish to reassert the picture plane. We are for flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth." Statement by Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb and Barnett Newman

Rothko was considered one of the founders of modern American art. Along with contemporaries Barnett Newman and Adolph Gotttlieb, he renounced social realism in the 1940s and began a life-long exploration into the mystical qualities of abstract form and color.

Rothko's paintings are deeply contemplative and communicate the artist's intense search for the timeless absolute in art. He used the power of color, form and scale to explore emotional and spiritual states of being.
