Label Text:
The site depicted in this landscape is the birthplace of Mary Lyon, the founder of Mount Holyoke College. The artist was distantly related to her and lived in this house in Buckland, Massachusetts, from 1851 to 1863. Because the house was destroyed in 1864, Elmer painted it from memory or depended on a photographic source.
