Description: woman; portrait
Label Text: Robert Street was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy. He showed his work, primarily portraits and history subjects, at the Academy and at other venues in Philadelphia, where he appears to have spent most of his career. Although Street was a trained as well as successful artist, his paintings reflect certain aspects of folk art. The subject of this portrait is an attractive young woman named Esther Hannold, whose name is imprinted in gold on the cover of the copy of the New Testament held in her hand. She was the daughter of George Hannold (1774-1855), a tailor, and his wife Esther Brown Hannold (c. 1777-1831), who lived in the Upper Delaware section of Philadelphia. Esther was born in 1805, and would have been twenty-eight at the time this portrait was painted, perhaps on the occasion of her engagement.
