Description:
Two female figures talking, placed in an abstract interior environment.

Label Text:
Avery’s figure paintings were usually modeled by the artist’s family and friends. On the left is Sally Avery, the artist’s wife, conversing with family friend Tirca Karlis in an intimate setting. But Avery’s work was about color, not people, and the subject here is the relationship between the brilliant Matisse-like colors and patterns rather than the relationship of the two sitters.
