Description:
Copperplate-printed handkerchief on linen with "The Cotters Saturday Night", which was engraved by Robert Gray based on painting by David Allen (1744-1796) done before 1792, which itself was based on the poem of the same title by Robert Burns (1759-1796) published in 1786. The scene depicts a family seated around a patriarch who is reading from the Book of Genesis, all surrounded by a narrow border of thistle.
