Description:
Framed photograph of young man with a cow and an ineligible inscription in pencil on the back (see larger version, HD 96.009.3) done by Emma Lewis Coleman (1853-1942). Ms. Coleman spent summers living in Deerfield's Frary House with her companion, C. Alice Baker, in the early 20th century. Coleman’s abiding interest in Deerfield and its history led her to write A Historic and Present Day Guide to Old Deerfield (first published in 1907), New England Captives Carried to Canada (1925), and a guide to the town’s burying ground. Her first book promoted the village as both an Arts and Crafts center and tourist attraction. Although often overlooked as a crafter, Coleman exhibited her photographs at the town's summer Arts and Crafts exhibits, and her interest in braiding led to the founding of the Deerfield Baskets Makers. This photograph was owned by Florence Copeland Stebbins. Florence Copeland Stebbins (1888-1966) married Albert Elmer Shaw (1886-1952) in Deerfield in 1913 and then lived in Webster, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Charles Henry Stebbins (b.1859) who married Mary Elizabeth MacMahon (1858-1919) of Providence, RI, in 1880; granddaughter of Evander Graves Stebbins (1821-1885) and Matilda Childs Stebbins (1824-1885) of Deerfield; and great granddaughter of Zebina Stebbins 1797-1879) and Ruby Graves Stebbins (1796-1877) of Deerfield.. This frame has a framer's lable for "George N. Lucia / Dealer in / Engravings, Etchings, / Photographs, Paintings / Picture Frames & Artist Materials / 229 Main St., Northampton, Mass./ Artistic Framing a Speciality." Examples of this photograph by Emma Coleman are seen in a photograph by Frances and Mary Allen of the First Deerfield Arts and Crafts exhibition in the Village Room, c. 1899 in the Collection of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association.
