Description:
Cabinet card photograph of an oval miniature painting of Capt. John Bryant (1743-1816) done by "Geo. W. Hale, So. Deerfield, Mass." The inscription on back reads: " Capt John Bryant, b. Boston 11 May 1743, d. Springfield 1st May 1816, Age 73." Both born in Boston, John Bryant married Hannah Mason (1757-1829), the daughter of Col. David Mason (1726-1794) and Hannah Symmes Mason (d.1788), in 1779 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, where they are both buried. John Bryant succeeded his father-in-law as Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Springfield Armory. John and Hannah's son, John Bryant (1780-1865) became a Boston merchant in the firm of Bryant and Sturgis, and married Mary Cleveland Smith (1784-1860), the daughter of Rev. John Smith (1752-1809) and his first wife, Mary Cleveland Smith (1759-1784). John and Mary Bryant's daughter, Sarah Smith Bryant (1812-1887) of Boston, and married Joseph Story Fay (1812-1897) in 1840.
