Description:
Mezzotint titled "Black Monday or the Departure for School", engraved by John Jones (1745-1797) after a painting by William Redmore Bigg (1755-1828). Plate produced in England; dated Dec. 1, 1790 This middle-class domestic scene features a woman supervising the tea table as the family is about to send a child off to boarding school. The orderly tea table symbolizes the stability and prosperity of the English family, with the woman in a traditional position of authority.
