Label Text:
Born in Petersburg, Virginia, Jerome Myers first painted commercial signs for a living before studying at Cooper Union and the Art Students League in New York. He was associated with the Ashcan School and was especially close to the artist John Sloan. Intrigued by the bustling streets and ever-changing populace of New York's Lower East Side and Brooklyn (depicted here), Myers often portrayed crowded marketplaces and outdoor events with sympathetic spontaneity.
