Description:
Hourglass with two conical-shaped glass containers joined at the center with composition material filled with fine yellow sand. The glass is glued to the circular wooden top and base, which are held together with five tapered spokes; the center top has two incised concentric circles. The sand takes approximately 58-59 minute to pass from one container to the other. Many of these pieces were exported from Europe (often France) to America. According to 20th century labels on the base, the glass belonged to Lydia Wallace (or Wallis in Bernardston history) (1765-1835) who married Zalmuna Chapin (1764-1854), a Bernardston farmer. Their son, Lucius Chapin (1792-1878), machinist, millwright and carpenter married Hannah Barton (1798-1885); their daughter Hannah Adeline Chapin (1821-1892) married Richard Henry Hoyt (1820-1892), whose father was Theodore Barnard Hoyt (1786-1874) of Deerfield and Bernardston; their daughter Harriett Isabella Hoyt (1846-?) married Nahum Sawin Cutler (1837-?); their daughter, Lucy Jane Cutler (1866-?) married Harry Whiting Kellogg; their daughter married ? Higginbotham. The hourglass ended up in Florida where it was purchased by HD. The labels include: "Used about 1790-1800 Lydia Wallace, wife of Zalmuna Chapin - Bernardston, Mass"; "Used ab 1790/1800 Lydia Wallace wife of Zalmuna Chapin in Bernardston, Mass now in possesion of Mrs. N.S. Cutler her gr, gr dau."; "Now in possession of Hariet Hoyt Cutler her gr. grandaughter"; "Later owned by her dau. Lucy Kellogg & her daughter"; and "Evelyn K. Higginbothem - gr. gr. gr. grandaughter of Lydia W."
