Description:
Man’s breeches made from buff-colored woolen (possibly camlet) with linen and cotton facings. Construction features include a fall-front closure, one welt hip pocket, and brass shank buttons with corresponding worked button holes. American, made from English worsted/woolen fabric, 1780s-1790s. Probably worn with single-breasted waistcoat (2017.30.5). CBL: 32 ½”. Possibly part of a military uniform worn by Colonel Elisha Porter (1742-1796) of Hadley, Massachusetts, it is an important example of late 18th-century officer's uniform owned and worn in the Connecticut River Valley. A single worked, horizontal button or buckle hole at the center back of each knee band suggests a reinforced recepticle for the knee buckles.
