Label Text:
James David Smillie’s etching was published in Sylvester Koehler’s Original Etchings by American Artists in 1883. This limited-edition publication would have reached a smaller number of collectors, probably fewer than 1,000. In his introduction, Koehler noted the advantages of etching were “freedom and warmth of its line” and “the brilliancy to be obtained by judicious printing”—the very cornerstones of the etching movement.
