Description:
Possibly the remnant of an embroidered skirt or dress hem. Chinoiserie embroidery motifs. The fragment's metallic elements, when new and shiny, would have added depth and sparkle to the piece.Probably originally part of a gown hem, or perhaps a petticoat hem. Also made in India, 1790-1805. It came into the collection in 1997, as part of a large collection of textile fragments (mostly printed) from Mildred J. Davis (life dates) of New Bern, North Carolina. Mildred (Mrs. C. Wingfield) collected many (but not all?) of these fragments around New England, having been a teacher somewhere in New Hampshire (adult education classes) and also knew former Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, textile curator Gertrude Townsend, and supposedly went on country shopping excursions with her. So we can speculate that these are all family or collected items, worn in America, England, or Europe.
