Description:
Powder horn inscribed “[RO or HO]WLAND:S : HORN : M : IN : THE / LIBERTY : OR : DEATH / OLD : THOMAS : GAGE : GOING : FROM : BOSTON : FOX : COCK.” Although cut down long ago, this horn inspired Rufus Grider to draw hundreds of horns that he discovered near his home in the Mohawk Valley of upstate New York. Today the New-York Historical Society owns his record of important drawings. The subject matter here parallels lifting the Siege of Boston and the departure of General Gage, his musket slung upside down over his shoulder, with Virginian Patrick Henry and his patriotic cry, “[Give me] Liberty or [give me] Death!”
