Description:
"Gershom Mott," Roxbury, Massachusetts. Gershom Mott served as a lieutenant in the 2nd New York Artillery Regiment; as a captain in the 1st New York Regiment on March 8, 1776; and as a captain in the 2nd Continental Artillery from January 1, 1777 to June of 1783. Although not an artistically gifted calligrapher, the engraver of this extremely large horn did his best to be consistent. The carving and lettering are carefully planned and meticulously executed and the chip carved border is of high quality. Other decorations include a lone unicorn, a man-of -war under full sail, a Lorelei, a deer, two whales, two birds, and a single-masted ship. A large alligator and a passive lion is walking above a four-sided fort . These motifs, along with an extremely fine view of Boston cover the entire surface of the horn. All of the decorations are far more realistic than those of other Siege of Boston horns. The engraver evidently consulted print sources and copied them closely.
