Description:
"Captain Nathaniel Porter," of Lebanon, Connecticut, Crown Point, New York. Nathaniel Porter served during the 1755 campaign and during the 1756 campaign Porter became captain of the 4th company. Porter is not listed in the official rolls for later campaigns, but his own account books show that he was active during the 1758 campaign and his horn attests to his duty during the 1759 campaign. The carver of the Porter horn incorporated the styles of several of the better Lake George School artists. However, the abstract British coat-of-arms, the marching soldiers, and the mounted officer are unlike any of the formations depicted by other carvers. Indeed mounted soldiers are rare. The Porter horn also has three differennt sailing ships, a fort (probably Fort Edward), and an Indian peering out from behind a flower.
