Description:
vertical ōban triptych; sensō-ga; nishiki-e

Label Text:
This triptych is a re-working of an original design by Adachi Ginkō (active 1874–1897), originally published by Fukuda Kumajirō in October, 1894 (Meiji 27), which depicts the Japanese warship Seikyōmaru attacking a Chinese warship, likely the Yung Wei (see Boston MFA 2000.380.14a–c). Here, the right panel has been reworked, as has some of the coloring, in order to transform the scene from an onboard attack to a suicidal assault on a Russian battleship. Given the similarity of the left two panels, it is probable that the blocks were reused.

This print is signed "Sento" (?) at lower-right of the right panel with an accompanying artist's seal in red, which appears to read "Nansei." Neither the seal nor the signature have been identified. The print bears no other identifying marks.
