Label Text:
Excerpt from wall label, for the exhibition “The Unexpected Encounters of Looking Again,” November 28 - March 15, 2007:
Kapoor is best known for his monumental sculptures rendered using industrial materials. His forms are typically curvilinear and play on perception. Kapoor is very interested in dualities: the play of light/dark, invisible/visible and body/mind. These dualities can be seen in his sculptural work as he is able to render industrial materials soft and pliable. In Untitled, Kapoor retains a sculptural quality in terms of dimensions and layering, but his real focus is on the blue material that strikes out from the brown background. The colors of brown and blue create the form, but at some point the color is simply color. The contrasts between the blue and the brown and the tension between color and form create dualities that engage the viewer. Rebecca Karp (M.A. '08)
