"Lieutenant Joseph Smith," Lake George, New York. Joseph Smith is listed as a second lieutenant in the 4th company of the New Hampshire Regiment. There is no other record of Smith's service. The Smith horn combines features of several Lake George School carvers. The calligraphy of the name, place, and date is similar to that of J.W., with winglike serifs on some of the letters. The motto W A R, found on horns by the Selkrig-Page carver , is not so stylized as that master's mottoes. The letters of the word W A R are separated by swords, and below is a floral design reminiscent of that on the Aaron Page horn. Two winglike devices and two small round prickly objects appear above the swords between the letters of W A R. The symbolism of the drawngs above Smith's name, a pine tree and a caged parrot, is not clear. Another, later , hand crudely incised a sailing ship and the letter M on the reverse side of the horn.
