This print is signed at lower-left "Toyokuni ga" ('drawn by Toyokuni') in a red toshidama cartouche. To the right of the signature are the circular aratame seal of the censor and accompanying oval date seal, which indicates inspection and approval during the fourth lunar month of 1857 (Ansei 4). Beneath the censor's seals is the mark of publisher Kagaya Kichibei (also known as Kagaya Kichiemon) of the firm Seiseidō. The actor's role is printed at upper-left within the red cartouche. The actor has been identified using records from the Waseda University Theatre Museum, as well as the actor's crest, or 'mon,' the four rhomboid shapes visible on his robe.
