Description:

Label Text:
Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Sara Ottomano, class of 2015:

A prolific portraitist, Isabey was at one point the painter for Napoleon and his family. He developed a style of portraiture that was inspired by English mezzotint engravings that focused on tonal changes rendered in black chalk. The identity of this sitter is not known, but she is seated before an Italian landscape framed by Venetian blinds. Clues of the clothing and other accouterments point to a date around 1800 for the drawing, which is on a piece of acidic wove paper that has darkened, setting off the lead white details in high relief.
