Description:
New Mexican retablos of the 18th-19th century were commonly created from water-based paints (colored with native dyes) and wood (pine). This retablo features the Holy Trinity--the father, son, and holy spirit frequently associated with Catholicism, as well as with retablos. Painted in red, green, blue, white, black, and yellow, this item is colorful and detailed. It features uncharacteristic flower and spiral motifs, as well as a small dove that appears between the two spirals at top. The retablo displays numerous holes where the item would have been displayed on a wall inside a home. AP2018
