Description:
"Lieutenant Christopher Palmer," of Stonington, Connecticut, Fort Edward, New York. Christopher Palmer was a second lieutenent during the 1758 campaign. He had also served during the 1755 and the 1756 campaigns. This horn was carved by a skilled engraver who used bold, sophisticated calligraphy for the owner's name. The flourishes suggest a keen desire to employ a stylish and up-to-date manner. The balance of the lettering includes many Lake George School effects, including the winged crossbar in the two "H's" & "A."; the copperplate lettering of the second line; and the block lettering of the third line. The floral design of stylized tulips is of high quality and the "big fish, little fish " motif is extremely humerous. A smaller calligraphic device is the copperplate scroll conecting the stylized tulips.
