Label Text: Professor Hawkins acquired this print in Goettingen, where he spent the 1973-1974 academic year. While there, he attended an exhibition of work by the "Zebra" artists. The Zebra group, of which Ullrich was one of four founding members, was created in opposition to the Hamburg Academy of Fine Art's emphasis on Abstract art. The group produced a manifesto entitled 'Der neue Realismus' that espoused a reinterpretation of figurative painting, largely based on photographs, with an emphasis on color and sculptural, hard-edged forms.
When Hawkins returned to the gallery to purchase this print, which he describes as having "haunted" him, the staff told him they were all gone. By happy coincidence, he was able to purchase this print two months later when he dropped by the same gallery and spotted a copy leaning unceremoniously against the wall.
